What is an Apostille? The word Apostille is of French origin. It is a certificate that reers to an addition, annotation, or remark made at the end of a document. Many countries require verification of the authenticity of foreign documents to be used internationally. An embassy or consulate may require legalization in order to be certified of use in foreign countries, however, the Apostille Hague Convention of 1961 abolished that process for over 100 countries. The convection provis for simplified certification of public and private documents to be used in countries within the convention. The State department issues an Apostille certificate to ensure that the documents will be recoginized and accepted in another country within the Hague Convention. In order to obtain an Apostille, the document must be notarized as well as authenticated by a County Clerk.
